Analysis of the sustainability of a forest-tea production system: A case study in Ban Kui Tuai, Tambon Papae, Amphoe Mae Taeng, Changwat Chiang Mai

Donato Romulo C. del Castillo (1990)

The forest-tea production system, which is considered as a permanent agricultural system, is environmentally suitable for the highlands in northern Thailand. Unfortunately, at Ban Kui Tuai, the miang production, which is the most dominant activity in the forest-tea production system, presently does not produce good enough income for the tea farmers because of the declining trend of demand for miang and also utilizes enormous amount of firewood. In addition, the demand for firewood for cooking has increased at about two percent a year besides the additional demand for firewood due to the migration to the village.

To overcome the problems to make the agricultural system at Ban Kui Tuai sustainable both environmentally and economically, fast-growing trees must be planted and additional potential economic (agricultural and non-agricultural) activities must be investigated and introduced to the village to generate supplementary income for the farmers to survive in the long term.
