To share experiences and develop a curriculum for Community-based Natural Resources Management (CbNRM)

 

22 nd April, 2007: arrive Hue

 

23 rd April, 2007: Day 1:  

08:00-08:30 Registration

09:00-09:15 Opening and welcoming (HUAF’s Rector and Dr. Le An)

09:15-09:30 Introduction of participants (Dr. Attachai)

09:30-11:30 Country case presentation with full paper (As a result of Upland Agriculture Task Force)

09:30-10:00 Cambodia case (Dr. Bunthan)

10:00-10:30 Laos case (Mr. Bounthanh)

10:30-11:00 Thailand case (Archan Phrek)

11:00-11:30 Vietnam case (??)

11:30-13:30 Lunch break

13:30-15:00 CbNRM Concepts and tools (Dr. Le An to request Dr. Dung from Tay Nguyen University and Mr. Cai to present a review of CbNRM concepts and tools as well as provide applications in Vietnam. They will give draft and details training material. 60 minute for Cai and Dung, 30 for each.

15:00-15:30 Break

15:30-17:00 Small group discussion (three groups) Each group with about 10 participants.

Cam: 4; Lao: 5; Thai: 6; Vietnam: …6 with transportation

Total: 30 participants in 3 groups.

Prepare some references for group discussion 3, 4, 8, 7 and 10

  • Each group will discuss ONE topic and lead to curriculum development

(topic 3) CbNRM, livelihood strategies (marketing) and poverty reduction (Ajan Phrek)

(topic 4) Linking CbNRM and policy innovations: (Mr. Cai)

    • community forestry and community forestry law buffer zones
    • cases of linking local innovations and policy formulation

(topic 8) Group formation processes and roles of local organizations in CbNRM (Mr. Bounthanh)

24 th April, 2007: Day 2: Field Trip (whole day)

  • An upland site: Hong Ha commune some 45 km west of Hue city, where we can cover all discussed topics. Commune leaders will present short presentation with translator
  • 07:00 Depart Hotel for Hong Ha commune

09:00 Arrive at Hong Ha commune

09:00–11:30 Commune presentation, discuss with invited local people

13:00–15:30 Village walk

15:30 Depart the Commune

17:00 Arrive the hotel in Hue city

  • FYOD and free time in Hue city

 

25 th April, 2007: Day 3:

08:30–10:00 Small three group discussion (continue)

08:30–09:00 Presentation on Conflict management (and discussion) Mr Cai and Mr. Hoang

  • Cambodia : HH income generation and community development potentials
  • Laos : Water and forest
  • Thailand : Biodiversity Organic farming (production system in the research areas)

2. Concept of CbNRM in relation to upland ecosystems (afternoon 2:30, groups iscussion)

3. CbNRM, livelihood strategies (marketing) and poverty reduction

  • community forestry and community forestry law

Next step activities

  • Developing drafts of Upland Agriculture curricular (Multi-dimension, multiple-language, interconnected components and link upland to lowland, production to marketing to quality to environment) in August 2007 (Luangprabang, Laos PDR).
